Meet The Pastor - Pastor Elington I. Bates

Pastor Bates of Mount Olive Baptist Church of Woodstock GA“Feed My lambs, Tend My sheep,” Christ spoke these words to Peter while at the same time asking Peter “do you love Me?” Often, the church is compared to a flock; likewise, the pastor is compared to a shepherd who cares for, feeds and guides his flock.

Since the fall of 2009, Christ has given me the grace to serve as Mount Olive’s Senior Pastor, “Feeding His lambs, and Tending His sheep.” My father was also given the grace to pastor, as well as two of my siblings, other close family members are pastors or associate ministers, including my daughter Sheila. The Bible declares that “…He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ,” (Eph 4:11, 12). I am a witness and a firm believer that the Word of God through preaching, teaching and the ministry of the Holy Spirit can and will transform lives. There is but one true living God, the God of the Scriptures; God is Spirit, and we must worship Him in spirit and in truth.

“For who is greater, he who sits at the table, or he who serves? Is it not he who sits at the table? Yet I am among you as the One who serves” (Luke 22:27).
With these words, Jesus explained the nature of the kingdom of heaven to His disciples; letting them know that His kingdom is not like the kingdoms of the world. They, like we, are “in” the world, but not “of” the world. In the world, I served our country via the United States Army from 1967-1971; thereafter, earned a degree in Automotive Technology and joined the General Motors management team in Glen Burnie, MD. While working full-time, I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Applied Behavior Science from Louis University, all “in” the world.

My “in the world” employer transferred me to Georgia where I retired after three years. However, during the same time frame, “God” brought me to a church home at Pleasant Hill in Roswell, GA, where I was called by God into the Gospel ministry, and ordained a “Minister of Christ.” I served the next ten (10) years under the leadership of Pastor Sabin P. Strickland in various capacities including, Associate Minister, Elder, Deacon, Teacher, Chairman of Strategic Planning, and Church Administrator. God granted me much grace through Pleasant Hill’s, Minister Training Program, and its on-site courses through Carver Bible College. Such gives a fresh and new meaning to the words of the Apostle Paul “it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me ;”( Gal 2:20).

We are all appointed to die once. After a forty year journey, God called my lovely and devoted wife Linda and mother of our four children to be with Him. But the Lord God said in Genesis 2,”It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.” The same God that called Linda home blessed me once again “in the world” with the lovely and devoted, Cynthia “Jae” Bates.

Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, And whose hope in the Lord Jer 17:7
